Workshops are a key component of the ICSB conference. Community organisation, training and outreach are all advanced by this mechanism. Workshops can vary from a half day (approximately 4 hours) to a full day, extended if necessary through participation of a local organiser.

The proposal shall describe the purpose, background, estimated number of attendees, possible names of speakers, and general format of the workshop. Strong consideration will be given to workshop proposals that are of interest to an interdisciplinary community, and provide a framework for future research agendas. Early decisions may be made for workshops that require advanced preparations as well as for workshops that are held regularly with ICSB.

Examples of Workshops Held at Prior Meetings:

Systems Biology Markup Language (SBML) Forum

Systems Biology Graphical Notation (SBGN) Forum

Receptor Tyrosine Kinase (RTK) Workshop

Synthetic Approaches to Cellular Functions

Yeast Systems Biology Workshop

Systems Biology & the Human Health Risks of Environmental Chemicals

Integrative Cancer Biology Program

Systems Level Studies of Model Microbial Cells

Gene Network Models and their Applications

Vertically Integrated System Modeling

Venue

EICC is an international-class conference venue with a range of flexible seminar and meeting rooms. Your workshop organiser was involved in the 20th Arabidopsis conference that brought 950 international participants to EICC in July 2009, and was acknowledged as one of the best-organised of that series. These rooms and EICC’s support work very well for a range of activities.

Meeting rooms will be provided on a space-available basis in the Conference Centre. Space is available for up to 12 workshops to be held simultaneously, with capacities of 15 to 100 people (classroom-style seating) or 30-300 people (theatre-style seating). The smaller venues can be arranged to seat up to 36 people boardroom-style for committee meetings. An additional boardroom for up to 14 people is available.

A very wide range of AV services, poster boards and catering can be provided via the conference contractors, congrex. The whole venue will have wireless internet access for the duration of the event, which is provided to workshop organisers free of charge. It is the responsibility of workshop organisers to arrange for any additional requirements via Carol Welsh at Congrex; icsb2010@congrex.com.

Workshops before or after can be organised at venues in edinburgh university, via Prof. Igor Goryanin, subject to approval by the local organising committee. To reduce costs for all delegates, we have not retained the whole venue for a second day of workshops.

Registration and Fees

Organizers of accepted workshops will be charged for the venue and facilities for registration and charging via the main ICSB contractor, Congrex. The charges will partially offset the cost of using the conference facility. UK£10 per participant is an indicative charge for academic and non-profit users, for a full-day workshop in lecture-theatre-style seating. The charging scale is discontinuous due to the fixed size of the rooms. The charge will be pro-rated according to the duration (half/full-day) and seating required, and will vary for commercial workshops that primarily focus on using specific commercial products or systems, or at which commercial products are advertised, promoted, or sold, or which are primarily taught by the distributors or producers of those products. The program committee will make the final determination of whether or not a workshop is commercial.

Organisers may choose to offset this cost by charging for attendance. Workshop organisers must inform the ICSB workshop organiser of their fee(s). It is recommended that organisers arrange the AV, catering and any other services required before setting fees.

Congrex will provide registration and charging services for workshops. Congrex will provide a check-box for each accepted workshop alongside the online registration for the main conference, will collect the fees set by the workshop organisers and will transfer those fees to the workshop organisers. Online registration will remain available up to about ten days before the conference, and registration in person will be possible during the conference.

Workshop attendees are not required to register for ICSB.

Online information required. Workshop organizers must provide the content of a workshop web-page to Congrex for inclusion on the main ICSB web site, or must organise a separate web page to be linked to the main ICSB page, in a timely manner.

Other Requirements

No duplication, document preparation, or software distribution support will be provided by ICSB. The organizers are responsible for all such fees and arrangements. Congrex and/or EICC can support a very wide range of requirements and organisers should contact them directly.
